Choose social content pillars with a clear job for each one

Content pillars help a team decide what belongs in its social feed. They become less useful when they are vague labels such as “inspiration” or “engagement” with no explanation of what a reader should learn. Give each theme a specific purpose.

Begin with the questions behind the content

List questions people ask before they understand, trust or request your service. Group related questions into a small number of themes. A business support company might use practical delegation, clearer working processes and service explanations. These are examples of editorial categories, not claims about the interests of every audience.

For each pillar, write one sentence describing its benefit and another describing what does not belong. Boundaries make it easier for different writers to produce a consistent feed.

Build examples before committing to the labels

Draft three realistic post ideas for each proposed pillar. If all the ideas sound the same, merge the themes. If one pillar can contain almost anything, narrow its purpose. Look for a mix of explanation, concrete demonstration and useful questions rather than a fixed formula for every week.

  • Audience question the pillar answers.
  • Suitable formats and available source material.
  • Examples of strong posts.
  • Topics that need expert review or should be excluded.

Review balance without forcing equal proportions

For example, a delegation pillar could include a task-brief checklist, a responsibility handover example and a question about recurring admin work. A service pillar should explain what is included and how to start, rather than repeating a sales slogan.

Review a month of planned posts. Check whether the feed gives people enough context to understand the business and enough substance to return. Do not publish a weak post merely because a category has not appeared recently. The framework should support editorial judgement, not turn your feed into a mechanical rotation.

Take it into your working day

A good pillar tells a writer what useful conversation to start. Its value comes from the clarity of the purpose, not the cleverness of its name.
